Researchers have found that 6 year olds exposed in utero to one marijuana joint daily were less able to focus on tasks (inattention), and had increased impulsivity and hyperactivity – symptoms consistent with ADHD.
Older elementary age children had difficulties with visual problem solving as well as the difficulties found in 6 year old children. In addition, the Maternal Health Practices and Child Development Study (MHPCD), found lower reading and spelling scores in 10 year olds who were exposed to marijuana during the first two trimesters. These deficits persisted at 14 years of age.
Both the OPPS and MHPCD studies found children exposed to marijuana in utero were more likely to have behavioral concerns and depressive symptoms.
